About the Author
Bayani Mendoza de Leon (1940-2013) was a Fulbright scholar who taught Baybayin for over 40 years across San Diego’s and New Jersey’s Filipino American community. This manual represents his life’s work teaching the complete 43-glyph expanded system—the only comprehensive guide available.
The Scholarly Lineage
This book continues a 50-year tradition of Baybayin scholarship:
1976 – Ricardo B. Mendoza publishes “Pinadaling Pag-aaral ng Katutubong Abakadang Pilipino” through the Philippine Language Institute (Surian ng Wikang Pambansa), proposing the first modern expanded Baybayin system for curriculum use.
1980s-2013 – His nephew, Fulbright scholar Bayani Mendoza de Leon (studied under National Artist Guillermo Tolentino), refines the system and teaches it for 40+ years across San Diego’s Filipino American community.
2026 – After Ricardo’s work became rare (found only in university libraries) and Bayani’s manual went out of print (20+ years), this republication makes the complete scholarly system accessible again.
Academic Recognition: This methodology is referenced in linguistic research and theses as part of documented Baybayin modernization efforts. You’re not getting amateur work. You’re getting half a century of scholarly refinement.
