Commercial video production

A haunted attraction, a mall at Christmas, and a bank.

We are known for nonprofit fundraising films. The same method built for those has won a Gold Telly, a Platinum Hermes and a Gold Vega on commercial work. Our crew has filmed across the United States and in India, the Philippines and Taiwan.

What should a business look for in a commercial video production company?

Look for one that decides the story before the shoot rather than during the edit.

Most commercials are assembled after the fact out of whatever footage came back, which produces a polished spot that nobody remembers. Nimble Dragon Studios makes commercials for businesses in the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, Long Island and New York City, and travels for productions anywhere. We settle the story, the structure and the shot list before a camera comes out. That is why our shoots run short and our edits come back fast.

Our commercial work has won a Gold Telly, a Platinum Hermes, a Gold Vega and two Bronze Tellys, for clients including a bank, a shopping mall, a haunted attraction and a powersports dealership. We are based in the Hudson Valley and travel for productions.

The difference

Most commercials are decided on the shoot day

Someone writes a brief, a crew turns up, footage gets collected, and the story is assembled afterward out of whatever came back. That produces a competent spot almost every time and a memorable one occasionally.

We settle the story first. Who it follows, how it is built, where it ends, all of it agreed before a camera comes out. It is harder to sell, because for the first few weeks there is nothing to look at.

What you get for that is a shoot day that is execution rather than discovery. On the Galleria spot, casting was Thursday, approvals Friday, the shoot Sunday, and the first cut was ready Monday afternoon. The storyboard had already decided the edit, so post was assembly instead of hunting through footage for a film. Front-loading the thinking is what makes the back end fast.

What that gets you

One shoot day, more than one commercial

Because the story is settled before we arrive, the day runs ahead of schedule. We use that margin on purpose.

In 2012 we shot two commercials for Orange County Trust in one location in New Hampton, New York, on one day, with two sets of actors who appear in the background of each other's spots. One for personal banking, one for business banking, both feeling like the same real place. That one took a Bronze Telly.

We have done the same for a restaurant in Garfield and a jewelry exchange in Edgewater. Two commercials each, shot in a single day, edited months apart as the client needed them. The second spot cost an edit rather than a production.

This is what we call Story Stacking. It started on commercial work and we have been doing it since 2012, and it is a large part of why a second spot often costs an edit rather than another production. If you want the numbers, we publish them on our commercial video cost page.

The work

Four commercials worth talking about

2012

Orange County Trust

Two award-winning campaigns for the same bank, at very different scales. The first two spots below were shot in a single day in one New Hampton location. Watch them back to back and you will see each group of actors in the background of the other's commercial. That pair took a Bronze Telly. The third was a separate, larger production with a crew of ten and five professional actors, and took a Gold Hermes.

Galleria at Crystal Run

They asked for shoppers being surprised by a giant gift. We told them nobody would watch it and wrote a story instead: a man who realizes at the end of the day that he has bought nothing, and the gift he finds is too big for every space he tries to get it through. One shoot produced the online film and a 30 second cut for television. Platinum Hermes, six times the engagement of their previous videos, and sales up that holiday season. Read the case study.

Where we shoot

We travel

Our crew has filmed in India, the Philippines, Taiwan and across the United States. One client flew us from New York to San Francisco to run a set of interviews because the questions mattered more than the crew being local. We are set up for it, and we plan for it.

The office is in Monticello, New York. A lot of the commercial work is close to home, in Orange and Sullivan counties and the wider Hudson Valley, and a good deal of it is in New Jersey, Long Island and New York City. But distance is a line item, not a limit. If the shoot is somewhere else, tell us where and we will price the travel into the quote.

What we make

The kinds of commercial work we take

01

Broadcast and online commercials

Thirty and sixty second spots built to hold attention rather than fill a slot.

02

Brand films

Longer pieces for a website homepage or a sales conversation, where the job is to explain who you are.

03

Campaign work

Seasonal and promotional, where the film has a date it has to land on and a result it has to produce.

04

Social and paid cutdowns

Short pieces cut from the same production, for the feed and for advertising.

Questions

Common questions

It depends on how many production days the idea needs, how many people are on camera, and whether it is scripted with actors or shot with real people. Published industry ranges put a professionally produced 30 second commercial at $5,000 to $50,000, with national campaigns well past six figures. Our own work spans a wider range: a straightforward single location spot starts at $1,500, and scripted productions with professional cast and a full crew run into the tens of thousands and up. We quote every project individually and confirm the scope in writing before anything is filmed. Full breakdown with the actual work in each band on our commercial video cost page.

Faster than most people expect, because the thinking happens first. On one campaign we cast on a Thursday, got approvals Friday, shot Sunday and had a first cut Monday afternoon. That is not typical, but it is possible when the storyboard has already decided the edit. A normal project runs a few weeks from kickoff, and most of that is the story work rather than the shoot.

Either. Plenty of clients arrive with a clear idea and we execute it. Others tell us what the spot has to accomplish and we bring back a concept. What we will not do is take a brief we think will fail and shoot it anyway.

We say so in the first meeting. The Galleria at Crystal Run asked for shoppers being surprised by a giant gift. We told them nobody would watch it and proposed a story instead. That spot won a Platinum Hermes and outperformed everything else on their channel.

Often, yes. We shot two spots for Orange County Trust in a single day in one location, with each set of actors appearing in the background of the other's commercial. We have done the same for a restaurant and a jewelry retailer, where the second spot was edited more than a year later from footage we already had. You pay for the edit, not another production day.

Both, and usually from the same production. The Galleria campaign produced an online film and a 30 second cut for television. Broadcast has stricter length and technical requirements, so we plan for it before the shoot rather than trimming afterward.

Yes, routinely. Our crew has filmed in India, the Philippines, Taiwan and across the United States, and one client flew us from New York to San Francisco to run a set of interviews because the questions mattered more than the crew being local. Travel and accommodation are priced into the quote as their own line, so you can see exactly what the distance costs. There is no region we will not go to.

We are based in Monticello, New York, in the Hudson Valley. A lot of the commercial work is close to home in Orange and Sullivan counties, and a good deal of it is in New Jersey, Long Island and New York City. We also work in Westchester and the Capital Region. Distance is a line item, not a limit.

You do. We archive everything we shoot and you can use any of it for future cuts. If you come back in two years wanting a new spot from the same material, you pay for the edit and nothing else.

The honest part

We will tell you if the brief is wrong

The Galleria came to us with a specific idea and we said it would not work. That is a risk. Some clients do not want to hear it, and we understand why.

But a commercial that nobody watches is not cheap. It is a total loss with a small invoice, and the money is gone either way. We would rather have the awkward conversation in the first meeting than deliver something you paid for and cannot use.

If your next commercial has a job to do

Tell us what it needs to accomplish and when. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

Most of these begin as a fifteen-minute call.
